At the outset, I want to say that the suggestion made by the State in its opening that the struggle in South Africa is under the influence of foreigners or communists is wholly incorrect.

The African people were not part of the Government and did not make the laws by which they were governed.

The lack of human dignity experienced by Africans is the direct result of the policy of white supremacy.

Chief among African leaders, Nelson Mandela is one of few statesmen to have achieved almost universal respect around the world and across the political spectrum.

His role in fighting apartheid, his imprisonment on Robben Island - where he came to symbolise the struggle of oppressed people around the world - and his ability to steer South Africa through the crisis of its rebirth earned him the international reputation of benevolent negotiator and quintessential peacemaker.

As South Africa's first democratically elected President in 1994, Mandela tackled the challenge of uniting both the country's racial groupings and a fragmented public service whose delivery mandate was skewed in favour of the white population.

Spending time with a man such as Madiba on a 24-hour basis, day in and day out, must have provided you with some wonderful memories.

Bear in mind that Madiba established his office and employed us to conduct and enforce a certain, specific work protocol for him and regarding matters concerning him.

I arranged for his household staff (this was before he was married to Mrs Machel) to send some personal goods, newspapers etc. for him with the relief pilots who left South Africa.

While on the one hand this may be true of Mandela as a modern hero, the complexity of deconstructing "Mandela as hero" is the fact that he does in many respects embody the characteristics associated with the Homeric hero.

His approach for the transformation of the country places greater agency within black communities for instrumenting change.

The press at the time did little to explain the Defiance Campaign (why would they - it was not in the best interest of maintaining the apartheid regime) but instead showed how it was only a small group of black activists who were instigating protests.
